Assignments AR 6c & 6d : Relevance of Research & Summary of Methods

Assignment AR 6c

How My Research is Relevant

Initially I found it fairly difficult to find academic research on Genealogy, since it is thought of as a 'Hobby', though this is changing. In particular academics involved in the Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (CRESC) at the University of Manchester have been carrying out studies in this area.

But it was the discovery of elements within my own family history that has provided me with inspiration for my practice. I have also read philosophical debate on Memory and that has also given me an insight and knowledge as to why memory is an important part of all of us as individuals, and how that gives us a sense of place.

I have more recently been looking at the work of Berlin based composer and artist Arnold Dreyblatt, whose Memory Work has involved utilising 'Archives' and how the ownership of archives can be a method of control. I feel that investigating this area further could lead to my practice evolving.

I know also that I need to research the Public Art/Social Sculpture area as I need to understand how all those processes work if I am to play an active part in it.

Assignment AR 6d

Research Methods/Methodologies, A Summary

At the beginning of my current project I produced a plan, which included methodologies I intended to utilise. However as I have progressed and my ideas evolved these initial research methods have become irrelevant. Reading books, journals, articles and researching online has revealed much useful information and there is much more for me to digest, so that will continue.

On the practical front, in particular Art Metalforging is also an area with little written about it. Although a book by David Hawkins "Art Metalforging' is informative, it seems that I will need to meet some practitioners in order to see and learn more. David Hawkins book fortunately includes many of the most influential artists in the field so I am able to build up my knowledge of them and their practice.
